- Two curved horns – a characteristic feature found in certain Himalayan depictions of Garuda.
- Hand-carved wood – a sculpted beak, expressive eyes, and intricate ornamental details.
- Hand-painted finish – decorative details completed with original hand painting.
- Darker color palette – a combination of deep red, black, and gold tones with dark blue-black accents.
Garuda – the protector who triumphs over serpent beings
Garuda is the legendary king of birds and the loyal mount of the Hindu god Vishnu. In Nepalese tantric Buddhism, he also appears as a powerful protective deity. His greatest adversaries are the Nagas – mythical serpent beings associated with water, the underworld, and hidden treasures.
According to ancient legend, their enmity began with a dispute between Garuda's mother Vinata and Kadru, the mother of the Nagas. Garuda became their feared adversary, which is why he is traditionally depicted with a snake in his beak or talons. The snake in his beak symbolizes victory over danger and the overcoming of obstacles.
In Buddhist symbolism, this motif also takes on a spiritual dimension. Garuda represents the ability to overcome negative forces and the so-called three poisons of the mind – desire, hatred, and ignorance. His horned form is also reminiscent of the Tibetan mythical bird Khyung, which is likewise associated with protection and fearlessness.
Wall mounting – The mask has a nail attached to the back for hanging. A hook or other suitable hanging hardware can also be added at your discretion.
Please note: the mask has minor surface scratches.
