Hotei (also Budai) was a Chinese monk who lived in the 10th century AD. He is depicted with a large belly and a sack full of sweets, a ball of wealth or gold ingot. His presence symbolizes success, wealth and prosperity. It is said that Hotei carried sweets in a sack thrown over his shoulder, which he distributed to poor children during his wanderings. He only took money from Zen monks. Once a monk asked him what the meaning of Zen was. Hotei dropped his bag saying "How can one know Zen?" Then he picked up the bag and continued his journey.
