Lotus is one of the most important Chinese plants, and as such is endowed with rich symbolism. Many peoples consider the lotus to be a symbol of purity and enlightenment. Buddhism, which uses the lotus symbol, has certainly contributed to this to a large extent.

The lotus grows from the mud, yet emerges a pure, fragrant and beautiful flower. In Buddhism, the lotus symbolizes the path to enlightenment, beginning in mud and dirt and heading laboriously upward. The Buddha is often depicted sitting on a lotus flower, symbolizing his rebirth in paradise.
