The custom of simply looking at cherry blossoms took hold in Japan during the Edo period. The cherry known as somei-yoshino, seen today in Japanese groves, was originally an ornamental garden variety that was developed in the village of Somei near Edo. Cherry blossom parades were also an opportunity for visitors to Edo to meet each other, introduce themselves and play: decorative kimono were worn for the occasion, and people sang, danced and celebrated the arrival of spring.
