How to choose incense sticks
Choosing the right incense sticks can feel like a daunting task. What is the difference between Japanese and Indian incense? Which fragrance should you choose for meditation, and which one is better for improving concentration? With this guide, you will no longer feel lost.
Country of Origin
- Japan - Japanese incense sticks are known for their lightness. No matter which fragrance you choose, you can always expect a very pleasant, subtle effect.
- India - India is the world's largest exporter of incense sticks. Extracts from herbs and woods from the Himalayan region are an essential part of their production. Their fragrances are usually more distinctive, spicier, and more intense.
- Tibet - Here, too, you can expect higher intensity. Earthy fragrances are based on rare herbs and woods collected in high-mountain regions. In Ayurveda, these ingredients are considered to have great healing potential.
Purpose of the Fragrance
Each fragrance has slightly different effects, depending on the blend of oils or herbs it contains.
- Relaxation - These fragrances help create a pleasant feeling after a long and demanding day. Look for scents such as amber, sandalwood, frankincense, and patchouli. One of the most popular fragrances for relaxation is Nag Champa.
- Concentration - Sandalwood is an excellent choice for improving focus. Cinnamon is a highly versatile fragrance that not only supports concentration but can also boost energy and libido. Jasmine serves this purpose well, too.
- Meditation - Incense sticks with cedarwood are traditionally used by Buddhist monks. You can also try Palo Santo.
- Stimulation - Green tea, rose, and musk are fragrances often associated with energizing effects. They also help create a loving and warm atmosphere.
- Mood Boosting - Lavender is the clear winner here. Even the thought of a meadow covered in purple flowers can evoke pleasant feelings. You can also try vanilla or pomegranate.
- Room Fragrance - Simply choose any fragrance that appeals to you.
We hope our guide helps you choose your next favorite scent. And don’t forget to ventilate the room - smoke from incense sticks should never remain trapped in an enclosed space.
