SHIVA LINGAM
Lingam is the oldest form in which Shiva is worshipped. Shiva means "light" or "fire", Lingam means "pillar". Shivalingam thus means "pillar of light (or fire). The Shiva-lingam is a powerful symbol of light, surrounded by flames that rise from the earth to the sky, sending light and warmth to all who are in their vicinity. Shivalingam represents in its form the being of man, his soul. In every Shiva temple there is a place, often accessible only to priests and selected worshippers, where the Shiva lingam is kept and worshipped.
The statue depicts the tantric concept of the lingam. The lingam (the male symbol of fertility embodying the all-pervading creative force) rests on the yoni (the womb, understood in Indian culture as the sacred source of life, the seat of supreme bliss). Everything in the world has a source where it originates and returns to the same origin after its demise. Yoni symbolizes the cycle of life. Feminine creative energy gives life, but it also gives death. Thus Shakti, the goddess expressing the feminine creative principle, also appears in ancient Indian mythology as Kali, the goddess of death. The union of lingam with yoni is the union of the masculine and the feminine, the creation and birth of life, the source of all life. It is the indivisible dual unity of male and female, of passive space and active time, from which all life arises. A serpent is wrapped around the lingam to represent the dormant creative (sexual) force, known to tantrikas as " kundalini".
