The best way to prepare a refreshing Maté is surely with a South American utensil - a hollowed-out gourd called a Kalabasa and a straw with a strainer on the end - a Bombilla. Thanks to the traditional way of sipping Maté with this utensil, the drink takes on a completely different dimension of quality and tea experience. Try it!
Bombilla
A kalabasa is a vessel made by hollowing out a gourd-like plant, known here as the Indian cucumber (Lagenaria Siceraria). These gourds are decorated in many ways, for example with carved pictures and symbols, covered with leather, decorated with metals (e.g. silver), with feet, etc. The calabash keeps the drink hotter for longer, is practical, lightweight and easy to carry.
A bombilla is a straw that has a more or less dense sieve at one end, which prevents the direct suction of the maté leaves from the Kalabasa. Bombilla is made of either natural materials or metal.
