MURUGAN - SKANDA (god of war and protector of the pious)
Murugan (Tamil), the first son of the god Shiva and goddess Parvati, the conqueror of the demon Tarak, is called by many names as a deity. He is mostly worshipped in southern India and in areas with Tamil influence (Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius), where he is more commonly called Murugan or Muruga. Murugan is the god of war and the patron saint of the Tamil country. He is sometimes called Karttikeya (son of Karttik Pleiades) or Kumara (beautiful young man). There are many legends about his origin, the most famous legend tells how Shiva's boiling semen got into the Ganges, where six pleiades (nymphs) were bathing. A beautiful boy was suddenly thrown out of the water. The pleiades (cartwheels) argued over which of them would be allowed to feed the boy. Therefore, Murugan was given six heads so that each of the pleiades could feed the boy. For this reason, Murugan is called Kárttikéja. Murugan is portrayed as a beautiful shining young boy with six heads, sometimes with twelve arms. Murugan is endowed with extraordinary strength needed to fight demons, his vehicle being the peacock. Murugan carries a spear, a bow and arrow, a rope, a wheel, a shell horn, a plow, a seamstress, and a sword.
