Tara (Deliverer)
Tara was originally a Hindu goddess, accepted by Buddhism long after she appeared in Hindu mythology. In Tibet, she is one of the most revered deities.
Tara has many forms (21 forms to be exact), most commonly found as the White Tara (embodying the fertile, maternal aspect of compassion) and the Green Tara (representing the active, energetic side of compassion and is the national protector of Tibet). However, Blue, Red, or Black Tara is no exception. Most of the time, Tara is depicted as a young girl, holding a lotus stem with a blue flower growing at her left shoulder. Her right hand is usually placed on her right knee with her palm and eye facing forward, as a gesture of supreme generosity. Tara represents the highest form of spiritual transformation that can be achieved through womanhood. She is also the patron saint of all saints.
According to legend, she arose from the tears of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, which he shed when he saw all the suffering in the world. Literally, her name means "Deliverer". Like Avalokiteshvara, Tara is known in Tibetan Buddhism as the saviour who appears when a devotee utters her mantra (óm táre tuttáré turé sváhá). She also helps remove obstacles on the path to awakening. Various written records mention other abilities such as, in particular, the conquering of spirits and demons and the curing of illness. He extends his kindly care to the good and the bad, the wise and the foolish, as the sun shines on sinners as well as on saints.
